Introduction to the scaling framework
The success of a scaling process, aimed at transforming a production system, depends on the active involvement of stakeholders operating within a specific territory and across the value chains of products or services. The collaboration and pursuit of shared ambition between stakeholders lean on three factors—Value, Risk, and Trust. Achieving a delicate balance between these factors is essential for effective scaling and transformation.
Based on the study of a large array of innovation and transformation processes, we have developed Scaling Framework for Carbon Farming.
The Scaling Framework unfolds in five steps, initiating with the definition of the system wick is subject to transformation and the generation of a comprehensive understanding of the boundary conditions among stakeholders (Step 1). Subsequent steps delve into specifying the transformation’s objectives and formulating a shared intent (Step 2), assessing levers, barriers, and feedback loops critical to the transformation (Step 3), mobilizing actors for implementation (Step 4), and finally, crafting a roadmap by developing a portfolio of interventions (Step 5). This structured approach ensures a holistic and dynamic progression toward successful scaling and transformation.
The process can be repeated over and over again to reach to deeper layers of understanding and therefore, you may want to return to the initial phases as understanding of the system and its components deepen along the process of systems transformation.
As several tools in this toolbox can be useful for more than one of the steps of the scaling framework depending on focus, you will find references to the same tool in different searches.
Step 1
I want to start by getting an overview of the context and the boundary conditions of the transformation I want to make
Step 2
I understand the context for the transformation and I am now ready to specify the objectives I am working towards
Step 3
I would like to analyze the levers and barriers for me to pursue my objectives
Step 4
I have set my objectives and I understand levers and barriers. Now I am ready to identify and activate the network of stakeholders and resources that can help me reach my objectives
Step 5
I would like to design a roadmap together with the relevant stakeholders to achieve our common objectives. This includes identifying funding to implement the roadmap.
