The I3S of arable crops in Southwest of France will have the Demonstration Farm, 7 Lead Commercial Farms, and about 100 outreach farms. It is located in the region of Lauragais which is an area where cereals and oilseeds are mainly grown. The soil is made with limestone and clay, on hillsides, where farmers are growing durum wheat and sunflower with tillage. There is almost no irrigation, and a high risk of erosion.

The demonstration farm, which is part of a network called Syppre, compares two systems : one with durum wheat and sunflower, one more innovative with more crops : wheat, sunflower, rapeseed, peas, etc. In order to deal with the erosion issue, the soil is covered and the tillage is reduced as often as possible. Legumes are grown so we can reduce the use of chemical nitrogen fertilizers.

Thanks to those solutions, the greenhouse gases emissions have been reduced of 15% on 4 years. Many observations are made each year on the crops and will be used in ClieNFarms in order to monitor soil fertility and carbon storage. Innovations are valued locally and will be strengthened with ClieNFarms.
