ClieNFarms to Publish Four Policy Briefs on Agriculture and Climate Neutrality
ClieNFarms is preparing a series of four policy briefs addressing some of the most pressing issues at the intersection of agriculture and climate action in Europe. Aimed at policymakers and other decision-makers, these concise, accessible documents will highlight key research insights and propose practical policy recommendations to accelerate the transition to climate-neutral farming.
What is a Policy Brief?
A policy brief is a research communication tool that addresses specific policy issues. It targets an informed, non-specialised audience, e.g., policy makers who do not conduct research themselves. The language used in a policy brief is therefore simple, clear, and avoids academic jargon.
The content is concise and condensed in a short document that outlines a pressing issue, synthesizes key research findings related to it, and presents policy recommendations derived from the analysis. Policy briefs do not usually exceed four pages, so they focus on particular aspects of the issue considered.
The purpose of a policy brief is to get the audience interested in the document’s analysis and recommendations.
Topics Covered
ClieNFarms is producing 4 policy briefs about different aspects of agriculture and climate:
- How can EU agriculture contribute to climate neutrality?
- Transition steps towards climate neutrality in ruminant farming
- Transition steps towards climate neutrality in arable farming
- Challenges regarding applications of monitoring systems to assess GHG emissions in European farms
How Were the Topics Selected?
The topics for the policy briefs have been defined based on a variety of inputs coming from WP5 partners. Some suggestions were collected in an online visual collaborative plataform,Klaxoon and complemented with suggestions shared via email. Further refinements were made through discussions with Task 5.1 and WP5 leaders to ensure the topics align with current policy priorities. The final list was presented at the ClieNFarms and Climate Farm Demo annual meeting in Cork, Ireland, on 11 October, where partner representatives provided feedback that helped shape the direction of each brief.
Purpose and Impact
These policy briefs are designed to spark interest in the recommendations they contain, helping policymakers translate research findings into practical measures. By providing clear and specific guidance, ClieNFarms aims to support evidence-based decision-making that balances environmental goals with the realities of agriculture across Europe.
The first policy brief now released, entitled “How can EU agriculture contribute to climate neutrality?”, was prepared by Alba Saez, IFOAM Organics Europe; Matthias Kuhnert, University of Aberdeen; Katja Klumpp, INRAE; Lin Bautze, FiBL; Sabine Reinecke, FiBL; Peter Fröhlich, AgriCircle; Deirdre Hennessy, UCC; Daniel Zimmer, Climate KIC; Jacques-Eric Bergez, INRAE; Guy Ziv, University of Leeds.
We look forward to sharing the remaining policy briefs with you as soon as they are completed.
